Ofafa Jericho are the new Nairobi County Secondary Schools rugby 15s champions.

Jericho clobbered favourites Lenana School 23-3 in the County finals held at Upper-Hill School yesterday. This being their first ever rugby title, the feat keeps them on course to achieving their 2015 objective of winning the national trophy.

Ofafa games teacher Thomas Muiruri told FeverPitch that he was glad his team had finally won the title after many attempts.

“We finally did it after very many years of trying, there is no looking back, we are determined to be at the nationals and East Africa games,” said Muiruri.

Ofafa, who dominated the match from the start, could not be intimidated even after Lenana earned their first points through a Bevan Kurgat penalty.

PRESSED ON

They pressed on and replied with tries from Thaddeus Mbaka, Alvin Odhiambo, Alfred Omwombo and Josephat Karuga. Joses Snoopy converted to give the Eastlanders a convincing victory. Hosts Upper-Hill beat Nairobi School 29-9 to finish third.

Nairobi School will join Ofafa to represent the county at Metropolitan games. Nairobi School will be banking on their good run last year, which saw them finish second at the county level, before excelling at the regional championships to advance to the nationals.

In hockey, Lenana School and Moi Girls Nairobi retained their Nairobi County boys’ and girls’ titles. Lenana thrashed Nairobi School 5-1, while Moi came from behind twice to beat Hillcrest 3-2 in the finals played yesterday at City Park Stadium.

 SECURED TICKETS

Both finalists in the boys’ and girls’ contests secured tickets to represent the county in Metropolitan games to be held at Upper-Hill School later in the month.

Lenana head coach Victor Okune said he was impressed by his players’ display.

“Remaining on top is not an easy thing as everyone is out to dethrone you, my boys have done well, we now look forward to the regional games,” Okune said.

He noted that their main objective this season is to earn a ticket to the East Africa Secondary School games set for Rwanda later in the year.

“We are very determined to be at the East Africa games, even so, we know that to get there we have to win at regional and national level. We are confident that our goal is achievable,” he added.

He also observed that intensive training had played a big role in his boys’ impressive form.
