KPL: Premier League players risk being victimised, Kenya Footballers Welfare Association warns

Active Kenyan Premier League players risk being victimised by clubs for their “lone ranger” approach when agitating for their rights, Kenya Footballers Welfare Association (Kefwa) has warned.

Former Gor Mahia defender Solomon Nasio, is locked in a pay dispute with K’Ogalo after he was left out of the squad following a surgery to repair his broken nose.

But after a highly publicised dispute, Kefwa chairman Nicholas Muyoti, (right) has cautioned players that they risk being alienated for seeking their rights through the media.

On Thursday during the weekly premier football programme on SuperSport, Simba Soccer Show, Nasio’s plight featured prominently, but Kefwa now insists the player has not helped his cause.

“We talked with Nasio and even asked him to come to Kefwa office to officially lodge his complaint.

Sadly, he chose to address the issue through the media. I believe Gor or any other club, can be engaged through proper channels which are legally binding,” Muyoti said.

While Nasio claims he cannot move clubs because Gor have not officially released him, the club maintains the player is a free agent and has not bothered to visit their office to thrash out outstanding issues, if any.

Asked whether football federation is aware of Nasio’s case, FKF CEO Michael Esakwa, said they have not been formally notified.

“If it is brought, we will try and arbitrate but we have to study the contractual documents.

We insist that a file of player contracts be lodged with us but unfortunately, they haven’t been. However, we will not let Nasio’s case just to peter out,” Esakwa said.

Nasio’s is not the first case, but the players’ predicament has been blamed on their ignorance.

“They are aware there is an organisation, ready to fight for their rights but most would not make that first step to visit their office. Kefwa is here to serve them.

“In fact, there are many cases we have taken up with KPL and have been amicably solved. Rather than go to the media, players should come to Kefwa because it is recognised by FKF and KPL,” Muyoti said.
