KPL: Sserunkuma to miss today’s Gor, Stima clash

Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions Gor Mahia take on Western Stima this afternoon at Afraha Stadium without influential striker Dan Sserunkuma. Sserunkuma left yesterday to attend trials in Denmark with division one side HB Koge denying coach Bobby Williamson a consistent goal scorer.

The Ugandan becomes the latest top player on his way out of Gor, a move that may compromise their title ambitions. However, Gor coach is not worried about the exodus and insists it will not affect them. “We have had the priviledge to bring on board some quality players. We will be fine,” he said.

With fellow Ugandan Arthur Ssemazi, Gor have found a good replacement for Sserunkuma in case he signs for the Danish club.

Ssemazi came on as a second half substitute against Thika United on Sunday but showed the qualities of a top striker in the few minutes he was on the pitch.

Another player that must have impressed Williamson is youngster Timothy Otieno signed from Talanta. On his debut, Otieno showed he has what it takes to shine at this big stage.

Stima will be seeking to bounce back to winning ways after last weekend’s 0-1 loss to league leaders Tusker. However, the power-men have a bad record against their opponents. In six outings since 2011, they have won once against Gor.

At the bottom of the table, struggling KCB take on Thika United. KCB coach Rishadi Shedu says: “If we do not win the next three matches then, we should forget about survival. Worse, we will play big boys Tusker and then Mathare United.”

Shedu added he is focusing more on building the mental strength of his players giving them the self-belief to start winning.

Troubled AFC Leopards return to Nyayo Stadium to confront old foe Mathare United while leaders Tusker travel to Awendo in search of points against hosts Sony.

Meanwhile, yesterday at Chemelil Complex, Chemilil AFC were condemned to their second KPL defeat by Nairobi City Stars courtesy of Dennis Okoth goal in 33th minute.

Fixtures: Today: Sony v Tusker (Awendo),  Stima v Gor (Afraha).

Tomorrow: Bandari v Muhoroni (Mbaraki), KCB v Thika (City), Top Fry v KRA (Afraha),  Leopards v Mathare (Nyayo) and Ulinzi v Sofapaka (Afraha).
