Football: Newton Mutegi Njue wows at Copa Coca-Cola tourney

Newton Mutegi Njue was the star attraction at the Copa Coca Cola U15 football tournament at Moi Stadium in Embu at the weekend.

He led his team, the Black Cats Academy, into the provincial finals with convincing victories over Embu Youth, Kavengero FC, Black Stars, Tharaka Youth and Mara United.

The utility player amazed fans with his football skills, easily changing positions from being a goal keeper, to defender, midfielder and striker.

“The boy is extremely good, despite being his coach, I am not sure of his best position in the pitch,” Black Cats coach Sammy Githinji told FeverPitch.

Although this is the second time the 14-year-old Form One student from County Secondary School is playing in this competition, Njue (pictured) believes   his team will make it to the national finals this year.

Through football, Njue was able to visit Nairobi for the first time in his life. This was after Black Cats, who were eliminated in the group stages, qualified for the Copa Coca-Cola national finals at Hope Centre, Kawangware, last year.

Reliable custodian

Njue, who joined Black Cats while in Standard Seven said: “My mother had no money. I was not going to school. I went back to school with the help of Embu Rescue Centre. I managed to join Black Cats from the Centre and since then my life has changed.”

The youngster says Embu Rescue Centre has not only helped him to build strong spiritual, social and economic skills but it has made him fit through football.

His fitness has seen him wear Jersey Number One in his school team where he is a reliable custodian.

Njue, who practices football from Tuesday to Friday at Urban Primary School with the Black Cats, plays friendly matches on Sundays to maintain his fitness.

Internationally, Njue is a fan of English Premier League side Chelsea. He says former England captain John Terry is his role model.

Locally, he supports Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia and adores Ugandan import Dan  Sserunkuma for his goal-scoring abilities.

He says Copa Coca-Cola tournament has helped him gain great football skills and is hopeful his team will win the national finals and fly the country’s flag high at an international boot camp in South Africa later in the year.
