EPL: Wilfried Zaha ‘frustrated with life at Manchester United’

Wilfried Zaha

Wilfried Zaha is becoming increasingly frustrated at his failure to break into Manchester United’s first team, believes England Under-21 boss Gareth Southgate.

Zaha has featured just once for United this term – in the Community Shield win over Wigan – and rarely even makes manager David Moyes’ bench following his £15million move from Crystal Palace.

Reports have suggested Zaha will be farmed out on loan in January, and Southgate, who currently has the player with him on international duty, admitted: ‘It is tough for him. It is tough for any player when they are not playing regularly.

‘Wilf has joined a new club with all the difficulties that brings. Have I noticed a lack of confidence in him? No. There is probably some frustration because he just wants to play.

‘But he is at a fantastic club and he realises that to get in the team is going to take a lot of work and patience.’

Southgate looks set to start the 20-year-old in Tuesday’s European Under-21 Championship qualifier against Lithuania at Ipswich after he was an unused substitute for Thursday’s win over San Marino.

‘It was never my intention to play him in both of our matches this week,’ Southgate added. ‘He understood that. But he has got the opportunity now to show people what he is capable of.’
