I’m not afraid of losing my job, says AFC coach Eymael

By Gilbert Wandera

Four matches into his reign, AFC Leopards coach Luc Eymael is yet to win a match with the former Kenyan champions.

For a coach who was brought in to turn around the club, it is a stressful situation to be in and doubts are already being cast over his ability to bring results quickly.

Ahead of Sunday’s derby against arch-rivals Gor Mahia at Nyayo Stadium, the Belgian says he is aware of the pressure his side is under but declared he is not afraid of the boot should it come.

“I believe I have done what is humanly possible to turn around this club. Even though we have not won since I came here, the playing level has greatly improved.

“I will continue to do my best and urge the players on but at the end of the day it is not my responsibility to score goals or to prevent the same from going inside our net.

“Iam not afraid of losing my job. I have a job back home in Belgium that I will simply return to,” said Eymael.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s derby, Eymael said he is used to such having been in-charge of Vital Club in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

“I have experience in taking part in such derbies. It was big in Congo when I worked there and it could draw upto 100,000 fans whenever Vital Club were playing Motema Pembe. This gives me the experience of such derbies,” he said

Elsewhere, Gor Mahia coach Zradvko Logarusic has admitted he is concerned about facing arch-rivals AFC Leopards at this time when they are struggling to post results on the pitch.

Logarusic pointed out the fact that their opponents are at a position where they have nothing to lose and beating Gor will be a big motivation and likely to erase all their past disappointments.

“The teams which scare me are not the ones that are doing well but those that are down because the only way they can go is up. Beating us will be a great motivation for Leopards.

“Right now they have nothing to lose and are very dangerous.  It is a special game for them because a win will erase all their bad times.  It is a result that will pull them up from their troubled position,” said the Gor coach.

Logarusic, who declined to predict how the outcome of the derby said: “It is a special game for the fans and I cannot say who will win or lose. All I can say is that some fans will be happy, others will be sad on Sunday.”
