Brewers take on Simba in a friendly tie

By Gilbert Wandera

Just two days after stopping Yanga 1-0, Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions Tusker are back on the pitch Saturday evening to take on Tanzanian champions Simba in their second international friendly.

Tusker coach Robert Matano will be using today’s match to try out his new signings who have joined the club ahead of the new season which promises to be busy and competitive with at least four trophies on offer.

Apart from attempting to retain the KPL title, Tusker have a busy calendar at the continental stage where they are scheduled to feature in the Confederation of African football champions league  and also take part in the regional club championships.

Tusker have signed 13 players after getting rid of a similar number of players at the end of last season.

New signings

The new players are Michael Olunga, Bright Jeremiah, Robert Omnuk, Andrew Sekayomywa, Khalid Awuton, Martin Kiiza, Jesse Were, Andrew Tololwa, Titus Wamalwa, Victor Maji, Edwin Ombasa, Justin Monda, Ismael Dunga, Moses Arita and Abraham Cockie.

Matano has already indicated his delight with the new players after the team stopped Yanga on Wednesday evening.

“We played very well and should have won by an even bigger margin. New players have given a good account of themselves today and it can only get better,” he said.

Dunga who was formerly at Sony Sugar scored the lone goal that sunk Yanga and will once again be relied upon to lead the brewers today.

After today’s match, Tusker will travel to Zanzibar for the annual Mapinduzi Cup which kicks off on January 2 to 12.

Top clubs

The tournament is held annually to commemorate Zanzibar’s revolution of January 12, 1964.

It offers top flight competition, with the leading teams from the Tanzanian Mainland league taking on the popular teams in the Zanzibar island.

The Azam side will line up a number of Kenyan players among them Humphrey Mieno, the ex-Sofapaka midfielder and defender Joackins Atudo who has just departed from Tusker.

The Mapinduzi Cup tournament will take place at the Amaan Stadium. There will be two matches daily, the first kicking off at 4.30pm and the second at 8pm. Two teams from each pool will qualify for the semi-finals on January 9 and 10.

Rest days are on January 8 and January 11, the eve of the final. Tusker are in group ‘A’ together with Simba, Jamhuri and Bandari both from Zanzibar.

Group ‘B’ has Azam, Mtibwa Sugar, Coastal Union and Miembeni. Yanga will not take part as they have a tour in Turkey.
