A court in the United Kingdom has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the killing of a Kenyan care-giver, Irene Mbugua in 2025. A case that has reignited concerns about the safety of healthcare workers who care for vulnerable people alone, the BBC reported.

Police established that Mbugua had been working as a live-in caregiver for 46-year-old David Walsh, who suffered multiple mental health conditions, including paranoid schizophrenia, autism, ADHD, depression and learning difficulties.

Mbugua, 46, a mother of four, was found dead inside a house on Markby Road in Winson Green, Birmingham, on June 23, 2025 after colleagues and relatives raised the alarm when they could no longer reach her.

Irene Wanjiru Mbugua who hailed from Mataara, Gatundu North, Kiambu, Kenya, was a dedicated caregiver employed by a care giving agency. The mother of four had traveled to the United Kingdom in search of greener pastures, reported The Sun.

It is reported that her kindness, compassion, and commitment to her work touched many lives, thus her easy interactions with her patients. She would be assigned the then 34-year old David Walsh to look after/assist through his mental health issues.

At the time of her death, the Kenyan caregiver had just been joined by her twins and her eldest child, having worked abroad close to two years. Concerns started rising from her family members when they were unable to reach her for a while, Kenyan media reported at the time of the incident.

That was when police investigations discovered that Ms Mbugua was, in fact, a live in caregiver to Mr Walsh, who was a mentally unstable patient suffering from several mental conditions.

Further inquiries would unearth one of the most devastating and cruel deaths of an innocent woman. Believed to have been killed on the evening of June 21, 2025, Ms Mbugua had been strangled before being repeatedly struck with a brick.

She also suffered skull fractures, rib fractures and a brain hemorrhage. CCTV footage reportedly captured screams coming from the house around the time of the attack, which is estimated to be around.

Her body had been hidden behind a sofa inside the kitchen area before being discovered, as Walsh attempted to hide the crime, as he used Ms Mbugua’s bank card the following day to shop at local stores, where he even bought clothes.

BBC reports that when the suspect returned home at about 13:00 and ran into some neighbors, he scoffed, "We are free from death and pain and have done what we have done" as he grabbed one by the wrist and told them, "Repent since and all will be forgiven".

The incident would come to light when a co-worker noticed an unusual silence from Mbugua as he had not heard from mother-of-four, prompting him to go to the property. When Mbugua did not answer him, he called the police.

Mr Walsh was arrested by the West Midlands Police officers who ultimately forced entry into the property, with reports indicating that he was found naked, screaming and behaving erratically, forcing officers to use a taser before restraining him.

Walsh was sentenced to life imprisonment and ordered to serve a minimum of 12 years before becoming eligible for parole consideration.

Court reports indicated that Walsh had stopped taking anti-psychotic medication months before the killing and had disengaged from mental health treatment.

Mbugua's 17-year-old son said he was "numb" and that he had "lost my world".

Her sister-in-law, Nancy, said she was "completely broken, she went to work and never came home and the person she cared for did this to her," she said.

Detective Inspector Michelle Cordell called the circumstances “heartbreaking”. In statements, Mbugua’s family described their loss as cruel and devastating and urged that her death be a wake-up call about the risks caregivers face.

“Our concerns are that there are thousands of Irenes out there who may be at risk. This is so sad, it could, and should have been avoided,” the family said.

Mbugua was laid to rest at Highwood Cemetery in Bulwell, Nottingham, UK.
