Towards the end of 2003, the Kenya football scene was abuzz as Harambee Stars edged closer to qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations finals.

When they finally beat Cape Verde 1-0 to qualify for the 2004 edition held in Tunisia, local fans were over the moon. The mood may not be the same this time around, but local fans are still on the edge of their seats as the national women team, Harambee Starlets, take on Algeria in the return leg of the final round of Africa Women Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The Starlets are on the verge of writing history as they will qualify for the Africa Women Nation finals to be held in Cameroon later in the year for the first time ever. This is the closest that Starlets have come to qualifying for a major tournament.

Everything looks to favour Starlets to go through. One, they held Algeria to a 2-2 tie in the first leg played last Friday. This means that Starlets will qualify if the match ends in a barren, 1-1 draw or a win courtesy of the two away goals.

Secondly, they are playing at home and this could push them to victory. Starlets coach David Ouma said they are ready to make history.

“Algeria is a good side and we cannot take any chances in this match. In the first leg, we attacked with speed and scored the two goals. We have to do our best and see that we qualify to the final round,” he said. Mwanahalima Adam, who scored in Algiers says she is yearning for another goal in this encounter.

“It will be good if I score at home. This is a very important match for us and we will do all we can, though it will not be an easy match,” said the St John’s Secondary School, Mombasa, striker. Ouma has maintained the same team which played in the first leg. Samantha Akinyi a student will start in goal and will get cover from Elizabeth Ambogo, Wendy Achieng, Irene Awuor and Nixon Dorcas.

In midfield, Mithuka Karimi will feature alongside Carolyne Anyango and Tabaka Chacha with Jereko Adam and Kinuthia Wanjiku looking for goals.
