Halls of fame to honour county high achievers

County governments might soon establish a hall of fame to honour individuals, bodies, units and institutions for exemplary feats if the Senate passes a proposed legislation.

The County Hall of Fame Bill 2014 sponsored by Senator Stephen Sang (Nandi) seeks to provide counties with a forum to recognise and award personalities and institutions that have excelled in various fields locally and internationally.

The law would ensure outstanding, exceptional or illustrious persons in any profession or activity, are honoured.

Mr Sang continued, “The Hall of fame will also be used to educate the public and serve as a source of information on the history, heritage and culture of the county, preserve the historical documents and artefacts relating to the county.”

Sang said the persons may not necessarily be recognised at the national level, but be heroes and heroines within the respective counties.

The law would empower governors to set up halls of fame in their respective counties, by designating a public site, accessible to all.

It provides for the establishment of a selection committee appointed by the Culture executive, which would be responsible for the maintenance of the premises.

The Bill proposes the deputy governor, Culture executive and chairperson of the Public Service Board form the committee. Four other persons would be nominated by the governor and approved by the county assembly, who include a representative of women, youth, persons living with disability and the elderly.
