Venezuelan diplomat to face murder charges

By Cyrus Ombati

Two suspects are expected in court this morning in connection with the murder of the Venezuela ambassador to Kenya Olga Fonseca.

The two include the embassy First Secretary Dwight Ashrubal Saragay and a medical doctor identified as Dr Mohammed Ahmed, a resident of Thigiri Ridge.

Police are however yet to arrest Dr Ahmed and intend to seek for a warrant to arrest him.

The other suspects who were arrested alongside Saragay will be witnesses in the case.

Nairobi Area head of CID Nicholas Kamwende said their case was progressing well and they have the right suspects.

“The doctor is at large but we intend to ask the court to issue a warrant for his arrest and later ask the public to help us getting him. They are the right suspects in this case,” he said.

Police say Dr Ahmed and Mr Saragay had been following the progress of investigations into charges of alleged sexual harassment against the embassy former ambassador which had been reported to the police in Gigiri in April this year.

Two senior government officials from Venezuela arrived in Nairobi at the weekend to push for investigations and arrest of those behind the murder of South American country’s ambassador to Kenya.

Fonseca was strangled in her house on Thursday night.

The acting ambassador had been staying at a hotel and had only moved to the embassy’s residence in Runda two days before she was killed on Thursday night.

Before her body was discovered in her bedroom, she had hosted a party at the residence in which several people are said to have attended on Thursday night.

Among those helping police with the investigations are her driver who was arrested in the city centre on Sunday.

Police said Ms Fonseca, who arrived in Nairobi on July 15, had not been given a police escort nor was her residence guarded by police.

Mr Saragay was arrested after he was linked to the death and his diplomatic immunity was waived.

The suspects have been in custody as police went on with their investigations into the incident. Police have established the envoy was murdered over power struggle at the embassy.
