World number 35 Sarah Achieng displayed a purposeful game to defeat Carol Orenja on points in an entertaining featherweight bout during the Girls Boxing tournament at Kariobangi Social Hall, Nairobi yesterday.

Achieng, who is also ranked first in East and Central Africa in the weight category, thrilled the crowd that included former president of the Commission Reuben Ndolo with her electrifying punches that landed on Orenja with perfection.

“This is just one of the many contest I plan to help organise. We are keen to take the sport back to the people and these boxers camn confirm that they want a platform to showcase their talent,” said Ndolo.

Orenja proved a hard nut to crack as she won points against the professional fighter.

Achieng started the second round with purpose and appeared to be going for a knock out.

Her combination of left and right hooks sent Orenja to the ropes several times but the later refused to succumb to the firepower of the ultimate winner as she fought all the way to the second round bell.

The indefatigable boxers extended their fight all the way to the final sixth round where judges unanimously declared Achieng the winner on 180 points against Orenje’s 166.

The opening contest, a featherweight match featuring Francis Kimani and Abdul Noor, had started on another electrifying note with the pugilist punishing each other.

But Kimani had the final laugh after his powerful left hook ended Noor’s campaign in the contest with just 2 minutes 35 seconds into the first round.

The bantamweight match pitting Nick Otieno against John Gitau lived up to the billing of a fight of the titans as it was closely contested.

Otieno won the match on unanimous point decision following a labored fight against Gitau. Otieno’s secret weapon lied in his left hand that he used to unleash powerful punches against Gitau.

Gitau responded with cleverly combination of right and left jabs that earned him more points.

There was jubilation amongst fans after Samson Ataro and Zarik Yakub of Czech Republic took to the stage for an exhibition match. The first round ended without any meaningful display from the two boxers.

Ataro entered the second round with zeal and power in a bid to dismiss Yakub through a knockout but the Czech fought hard to remain in contention to the final third round of the contest. The referee, former Olympian James Omondi “Demosh” cautioned Ataro in the second round for hitting Yakub below the belt.
