Hard-punching Nick Abaka on Thursday punched his way to the second round of the World Boxing Championships.

The win at Almaty, Kazakhstan increased Kenya’s chances of winning more medals in the championship after another Kenyan Rayton Okwiri made it to the second round.

In Thursday’s  fight, Abaka who is a member of the Kenya Defence Force (KDF) Boxing Club did Kenya proud by stoping Arro Kaupo of Estonia.

Abaka used his experience to combine his punches well to win the contest 3-0 in the middle-weight (75kg) category.

However, Abaka must go back to the drawing board a      nd strategise how to overcome the category’s fourth seeded Zoltan Harcsa of Hungary.

A bye to second round

The Hungarian has not been tested after getting a bye to the second round and Abaka needs to plan for the tomorrow’s match.

Team Kenya’s head coach Albert Metito said Abaka was outstanding in the ring and his well-calculated punches proved beyond reasonable doubt that he (Abaka) deserved the win.

“Abaka’s win did not come by fluke because he deserved it after outclassing his opponent,” said Metito.

Another Kenyan Simon Nzioka who got a bye in the fly weight (52kg) fight will be in action this afternoon.

Tomorrow, Benson Njangiru who also had a bye in the bantam weight (56kg) will be in the same group as Peter Warui who had a bye in the light fly (46-49kg) category. Warui takes on Kim Inkyu of Korea who also had a bye to the second round.

Elly Ocholla who was also given a bye takes on Simone Fiori of Italy on Sunday who also benefited from a bye.

Boxing Association of Kenya Chairman John Kameta said Abaka’s win has shown how his association was committed to reviving boxing in the county. “We expect more medals as the championship progresses,” said Kameta.
