Confront the burden of abuse and violence on female athletes

The brutal killing of yet another athlete shows why the government needs to quickly confront the scourge of abuse and violence against female athletes.

Coming six months after the killing of Agnes Tirop, Damaris Muthee’s death proves that the training fields in Iten and other high altitude  sites are not safe for female athletes.

After Tirop’s death, the ministry and National Olympic Committee of Kenya (Nock) met to strategise on how to address gender based violence in sports as well as mental health of athletes.

Muthee’s killing shows why these efforts, beginning with the implementation of the Catherine Ndereba taskforce report should be fast tracked.
