Kenya's Michael Githae on Saturday won bronze medal in the men's marathon at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

He clocked 2:13:16, behind Uganda's Victor Kiplangat and Tanzania's Alphonce Simbu.

After more than 40 kilometres of running through the twisting Birmingham streets, Kiplangat veered off course in the late stages but had built up such a commanding lead that the miscue did not cause any damage. The 22-year-old was a comfortable winner in a time of 2.10.55 ahead of Simbu, who came second in 2:12:29.

Liam Adams of Australia, who led the race for most of the early going ran well, in the end, to collect fourth at 2:13:23 and Jonathan Kipleting Korir of Kenya rounded out the top five with a time of 2:14:06.

Englishman Jonathan Mellor crossed the finish line in sixth place at 2:15:31.

It's the first medal for Uganda at the ongoing games, and medal number 56 overall (17th gold) at the games competed for by former British colonies.
