Trans-Nzoia County were crowned the new men’s football champions during the third edition of the County Assemblies Sports Association (CASA) Games that concluded on Friday in Mombasa.

The final match against Mombasa County played at Mombasa Sports Club was destined for penalty shootouts only for Benard Ariangana to break the hosts fans’ hearts with a late goal.

Mombasa who had made it to the final with an unbeaten record produced good attacks through Tudor ward MCA Tobias Sumba and his Freretown counterpart Charles Kitula but lady luck did not smile on them.

On their way to the final, Trans-Nzoia hit Homabay 1-0 in the semi finals while Mombasa secured an identical win against Siaya.

Immediate former champions Kakamega County were bundled out of the tournament at the preliminary round.

The theme of the games was ‘harnessing the power of sports and culture in reigniting hope and restoration in times of crisis’.

In basketball, Siaya County won both men and women titles. In men’s final, Siaya beat Kajiado 3-0 while their women’s counterparts defeated West Pokot 3-2 in lowly scoring matches.

In golf at Nyali Golf and County Club,  David Munyeki, handicap 13 posted a good score of 68 to lift the title after posting 30 and 38 in the first and second nine holes respectively. Vincent Karumba and Lawi Kibire hit a score of 67 and 64  for the second and third positions respectively.

Baringo County won the darts trophy with Kericho and Kiambu settling for the second and third places in that order.

In pool table, Kiambu, Turkana and Baringo were ranked in that order while Makueni won the chess trophy with Tana River and Kiambu coming in second and third respectively.
