Olympic silver medallist Julius Yego is itching to reclaim the world title he won at the 2015 Beijing Worlds as he starts his specialty in Doha today.

The 30-year-old had two troubled seasons with groin injury, but has since shaken off the groin and ankle injuries and is rediscovering his form following a victorious throw of 87.73m, his season-best at the African Games in Rabat, Morocco.

“Last season, my performance was poor because I did not meet the targets I had set for myself due to injuries. I am happy that I am fit again, having won at the African Games. But I’m still not where I was in 2015 or 2016,” said Yego also the Kenyan squad captain.

Meanwhile, javelin defending champion Johannes Vetter of Germany had an injury-riddled build up.

Forced to take a two-month competitive break in late June, the muscular German has made great strides to return to the competitive fray in recent weeks, winning three of his four competitions.

After hurling the spear out to 90.03m for victory at the match in his final pre-World Championships outing, the 26-year-old showed he will be in contention for gold in Doha. [Dennis Okeyo and IAAF]
