Tambach, Baringo dominate in Rift Valley games

Hosts Tambach, Moi-Baringo and Kericho dominated in the field events as Mosoriot took a commanding lead in sprints at the Kenya Teachers Colleges Rift Valley regional Athletics Championships at Tambach Teachers College in Elgeyo Marakwet County.

Tambach also ruled in the long distance races, yesterday, with most of its athletes finishing within medal bracket.

In the 3000m steeplechase, Takuna Kisaingo of Tambach won in 10:38 ahead of Mosoriot's Robert Silgich in 10:53.

Tambach also won in the women's high jump as Gladys Jeptum and Janet Chepkorir tied in the first position after they recorded 1.35m to qualify for the National Championships to be hosted at the same venue next week.

Peninah Maiyo of Tambach also won in the women's discuss with 21.70m throw.

Caroline Cherono of Moi, Baringo was runners up with a throw of 19.27m.

In sprints, Geoffrey Eregae of Tambach clocked 11.44secs to win the men's 100m ahead of Masika Wekesa of Mosoriot in 11.62 secs and Sammy Naibei of Mosoriot 11.64secs.

Chesta's Mercy Munyua won the women's 100m in 13.53secs ahead of Jepkoech Cherop of Jericho 13.81secs and Magdaline Chepyatich of Chesta in 14.10secs.

Teachers Colleges Sports Association Rift Valley regional Secretary Duncan Okwaro said their team was one to beat next week.

"This is serious business that is why we strictly pick the best athletes both in the field and track events for the national championship," Okwaro told Standard Sports.

In the women's long jump, Roselyne Jebet picked her ticket to the National Championships after she jumped 4.55m ahead of Gloria Kibet of Baringo in 4.48m.

Brian Wanyonyi of Chesta won the men's 10,000m walk in 58.00 minutes.

Wanyonyi was followed by Simion Kipyeng of Tambach in 59min34secs with Mathew Mutaliko of Chesta coming third in 1hour 14min.00secs.
