Emmy Chemutai clocked 42 minutes 12 seconds to win women's 10,000m as the Kenya Teachers Colleges Rift Valley Regional Athletics Championships began yesterday at Tambach in Elgeyo Marakwet.

Chemutai beat off challenge from her arch rival, Fancy Chesang of Tambach, who clocked 42.52 to finish second ahead of teammate Lucy Jepkurui in 43.58 and Lucia Chebet of Chesta 46.57.

"I feel great to have won this race and it has motivated me ahead of the national championships despite stiff opposition from Chesang (Fancy)," she said.

Chemutai added that she was looking forward to improving her time during the national championships.

"In fact, it was like a training session for me. I'm determined to do by best at the national championships."

The championship was officially opened by Elgeyo Marakwet County Director of Education Mary Karithu.

In the women's long jump, Roselyne Chebet of Chesta made a throw of 4.55m to emerge the winner.

Gloria Kibet of Baringo, who made a throw of 4.45m, was second, while Mercy Kangogo of Tambach (4.22m) was third.

Nancy Awuor of Kericho was fourth with a 4.17m throw.
