School games: Champions Sinyolo, Kisumu Day and Ambira complete easy wins in regional games to sail to semis in day two action
Kisumu County hockey reigning champions Sinyolo Girls sent a strong warning to rivals of intention of returning to the national arena after missing in last year’s showpiece by drubbing Pamela Mboya 3-0 and Dede 4-0.
Last year finalists Nyamira Girls registered the biggest win of the day after thumping St. Lucy’s Raruowa 6-1 and handing Kereri a 3-0 defeat to increase their chances of making it to the finals again.
Kisumu Girls also registered an important 3-1 win against Kereri Girls and a 2-0 win over St. Lucy’s Raruowa maintaining a hundred per cent winning start.
In boy’s hockey, Kisumu county champions Maseno kick-started their journey of completing a double of winning both county and regional crowns by defeating Kisii 2-0. Maseno, however, drew 0-0 with Homabay in their second match as Kisii defeated Pe-Hill 1-0.
Defending champions Kisumu Day defeated Agoro Sare and St. Mary’s Yala 1-0 in each game.
In basketball, regional boys’ basketball champions Ambira were in a class of their own as they registered 100 per cent wins in their opening two matches defeating Oriwo and Nyanchwa 69-38 and 55-59 respectively.
In the first match against Nyanchwa, Ambira started on the wrong foot after trailing 19-12 by the end of the first quarter but recovered to win the second quarter 20-11. Nyanchwa again proved too strong for the defending champions winning the third quarter 15-04.
Ambira finally sealed the game in the last quarter with 19-14 score as coach Patrick Mboya prepares to conquer Nyanza once more.
“We showed character in the game and it resulted to the victory over a hard fighting Nyanchwa side. Nyanchwa is a good team and the standards of basketball are rising in Nyanza,” said Mboya.
In another game, former champions Maseno School outclassed Oriwo Boys 68-34. Maseno coach Gordon Ogutu said his team is keen to reclaim their lost glory. Last year’s finalists Agoro Sare thrashed Nyamira’s Nyambaria Boys 90-22 while Maranda thumped Kanyawanga 51-38.
In another girls’ category, champions Barchando crashed Tuk Jowi and Asumbi Girls 45-30 and 28-10 as they seek to defend their crown. Siaya County’s Ng’iya Girls also made their intentions clear after handing Itiero Girls and Ototo 41-39 and 28-20 defeats.
