Inter-county assemblies: Inaugural CASA games kicks off in Nairobi today

It is all systems go for the inaugural County Assemblies Sports Association (CASA) games festivals themed "Enhancing the Legislative Agenda through Sports and Culture" that kicks off at Kasarani Stadium, today.

The week-long event which has attracted over 1,500 participants from the 47 County Assemblies,  will be officially opened by Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa at 9.30 am.

The teams will compete in 23 disciplines including football, volleyball, netball, athletics, basketball, beuty contsst, cultural dances, among others.

According to CASA Chairman Peter Anyule Imwatok, who doubles up as Makongeni Ward MCA, Nairobi County is looking forward to hosting a successful event.

"We thank Nairobi County for accepting to host the first CASA games. More than 1,500 participants are expected to participate. There are more than 14 stadiums that will be used to host the games. So, be aware that Nairobi is well prepared and ready to host the games," said Imwatok.

A tug-of-war contest between hosts Nairobi and Mombasa will open the games before moving to other venues across the county.

Though Tana River County Assembly speaker Nkaduda Michael Justin is confident of positive results, he believes the games will enhance cohesion, promote the exchange of ideas from the diverse communities in the country and appreciate devolution.

"I believe in the power of God and County Assemblies. We have come in full force, not to negotiate but to take victory home," said Nkaduda.

"But we believe this competition will bring a form of cohesion, reconciliation and display of culture as well as appreciate devolution."

Barclays Plaza, KCB Ground , KCA University, Camp Toyoyo, City Stadium and Ruaraka Stadium are the other venues expected to host the games. [Rodgers Eshitemi]
