National Sevens circuit leaders Homeboyz yesterday qualified for the quarter-finals of the Driftwood Sevens at the Mombasa Sports Club.

Homeboyz won their two opening matches to march into the last eight as they strive to once again dominate like they have done in the previous legs.

They have won the previous three circuits and winning the Driftwood will see them win the 2018 National Sevens circuit with two legs to go. The remaining legs are Dala Sevens in Kisumu on September 8-9 and Christie Sevens on September 15-16 in Nairobi.

In the opening match at Mombasa Sports Club, Homeboyz rallied from behind to beat Logistics Mombasa 19-5 with Alvin Otieno, Brian Wandera and Oscar Ayodi getting a try each as Johnston Olindi and Juma Brayan converted two conversions. Dennis Wechuli had an unconverted try for the Mombasa side.

Homeboyz silenced Menengai Oilers 17-5 where leading try scorer Mark Wandetto increased his tally to 24 after a superb touchdown to seal their quarter-final spot. Other try scorers were Oscar Ayodi, Jeff Oluoch with Olindi taking one conversion. Harold Anduvate made a try for the losers.

Oilers registered their first victory before losing to Homeboyz after they defeated Northern Suburbs 17-0 Anduvate, Derrick Mbaire scored a try each with Andrew Odero adding another try, which he converted.

Logistics Mombasa were bundled out of the main cup after they lost their second match to Northern Suburbs 21-5.

The Mombasa side took an early lead through Dennis Wechuli’s unconverted try before Oilers Eugen Omondi scored two tries and Felix Omondi added the third. Wilson Juma made three conversions.

There was last-minute withdrawal of University of Nairobi’s Mean Machine and Blak Blad after they were involved in a road accident in Mtito Andei.
