Sweden's Jimmy Durmaz was subject to vile threats and racial abuse after his side's dramatic World Cup defeat to Germany.

Durmaz, a late substitute in the Group F encounter, gave away the last-gasp free-kick that Toni Kroos scored from to keep the world champions in the tournament.

The 29-year-old tripped Timo Werner on the edge of his own box and Real Madrid star Kroos saved Germany with a devastating finish.

Durmaz was born in Sweden to Assyrian parents who had emigrated from Turkey.

Following the final whistle on Saturday, Toulouse star Durmaz's Instagram was flooded with shocking messages, insulting his heritage and family.

Durmaz played down the abuse, saying: "It's nothing I'm bothered about. I'm here proud and representing my country."

He was also supported by fellow teammate John Guidetti, who added: "He ran and fought the whole game, it's unlucky.

"It's completely idiotic to subject him to hate for that."

Tempers spilled over late on with Sweden accusing their counterparts of taunting them after Kroos' late goal.

The two benches almost came to blows as a result with Sweden boss Janne Andersson saying: "Some of the group leaders of their team celebrated by running in our direction, rubbing it into our faces by making gestures

“That really got me annoyed and angry. We had fought it out for 90 minutes and at the end you should shake hands. So I was very angry with that.

"People behaved in ways that you do not do. You should leave your opponents to feel sad. You do not act in the way they did. We reacted very strongly.”
