Coach Kerr is optimistic that 16-time KPL champions would go past group stages in Africa contest.

Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia beat Kampala City Council Authority (KCCA) of Uganda 4-2 in an international friendly at Afraha Stadium in Nakuru last evening.

Despite the loss, KCCA head coach Mike Mutibe said the match was a platform for him to test his players whom he referred to as a "second string side" because his other team members are with the national team, Uganda Cranes in the African National Championships (CHAN) in Morocco.

“We lost to a better side after missing my key players who are with the national team in Morocco.

"Our opponents managed to field two senior sides in both halves, which made us lose easily,” Mutibe told Standard Sports.

He said the match helped them in their preparations for the African Champions League first leg match against Cnaps of Madagascar in Antananarivo on February 9.

Gor Mahia head coach Dylan Kerr was confident that he will make it to the group stages of the continental tournament after their first leg against Leones Vegetarianos of Equatorial Guinea next month.

“We are determined to make it to the group stages of the African Champions League and the friendly match has given us a better platform to improve on our weaknesses," he said.

Gor Mahia controlled possession and striker Meddie Kagere and Francis Kahata missed numerous scoring opportunities in the opening minutes before newly acquired attacking midfielder Humphrey Mieno headed home the opener in the 33rd minute.

Boniface Omondi, who was from Nzoia Sugar, unleashed a powerful shot that beat the KCCA custodian Tom Ikara for Kogalo’s second goal in the 44th minute to give the KPL champs a 2-0 lead.

Gor Mahia dictated the proceedings in the second half and it did not come as a surprise when George ‘Blackberry’ Odhiambo scored the third goal in the 46th minute before Stephen Sserwada pulled one back for the visitors in the 67th minute. Odhiambo scored the fourth goal for KOgalo in the 81st minute.
