The Mombasa Golf Club course is one of the oldest in the country, having been built in 1911.

Located in Kizingo on the island of Mombasa, the course is a nine-hole field.

Most of the greens at the par 71 course are challenging, with most hitters often missing the holes.

But veteran club member Johnstone Wamunyua, who is a former club chairman, seems to have mastered the course so well that even the heavy winds from the Indian Ocean hardly affect his swings.

His hits were on point at the weekend as the handicap 17 Wamunyua posted an excellent 66 nett to win the overall title in the 2017 Club Captain Mark Mbua club nite tournament.

“I have played on this course for many years and this victory is a true testimony that I am not a stranger in this area,” said Wamnyua.

The golfer played a level par on seven holes and bogeyed the rest of the 18 holes to lift the trophy in the one-day 18-hole event that attracted 100 golfers.

Machakos handicap 15 A Kiiru was the runner-up on 67 nett, same as handicap 11 Gichungu Maina, who was third.

In Kiambu, handicap 16 Daniel Kamau posted 41 points to win the AHF chairman’s trophy while handicap 24 Mark Ndungu was the men winner on 39 points.

Handicap 4 Joyce Wanjiru claimed the lady’s title on 35 points while handicap 25 Margaret Mwai, on 34 points, was second.

John Ngure on 76 gross won the gross prize as handicap 19 Lucy Karua, on 29 points, won the sponsor's trophy.
