Kenyan international midfielder McDonald Mariga

McDonald Mariga’s club Unione Sportiva Latina Calcio have been dealt a cruel blow after being relegated to Italy's third tier league- Serie C.

Unione Sportiva Latina Calcio finished the Serie B season bottom of the table, having lost 15 of their 42 games.

A statement on football-italia.net revealed that Mariga’s club Latina were given a five points deduction after failing to pay their players on time, confirming their relegation from Serie B.

“Latina have been given a further five point deduction, confirming their relegation from Serie B.The Lazio-based club have repeatedly failed to pay wages on time this season, and have twice been hit with a one point penalty.

“Today the Lega Serie B confirmed that an additional five point deduction has been imposed, a ruling which mathematically confirms Latina’s relegation. With the deduction, they sit 11 points behind Vicenza, who are just outside the drop zone, with only nine points left to play for,” reads part of the statement.

The Towering Kenyan international midfielder joined Latina Calcio in 2016 after his club Parma FC was dissolved and demoted due to financial constraints.

Mariga was a member of the Kamukunji High School ‘Golden Boys’, which also included Kenyan striker Dennis Oliech.

At the height of his career, Mariga in January 2010, was set to sign for English Premier League club Manchester City, but he failed to obtain a work permit which stalled the move.

Then Kenyan Prime MInister Raila Odinga told the media that Mariga obtained a UK work permit but only after the transfer window for the Premier League had closed.

Mariga who was the first player in the region to player in prestigious European Champions League final against Chelsea coming in as substitute has been a very vibrant player who has anchored Kenyan national side to several feats in international assignments.
