ST GEORGES TRIUMPH: New champions emerge as Coast school games end at Mazeras

New champions emerged as Coast region secondary schools term one games came to an end yesterday at Mazeras Boys High School, Kwale County.

Interestingly, all the defending champions apart from Kaya Tiwi School relinquished their titles.

Kaya Tiwi School from Kwale County retained the girls’ basketball title for the second year running after they whitewashed Taita Taveta’s Mwakitawa 145-18 in the final.

Enroute to the final, Kaya Tiwi clobbered St John’s Kaloleni of Kilifi County 109-6 while Mwakitawa stopped former champions Shimba Hills of Kwale County 61-58.

In boys basketball, new champions emerged when St Georges of Kilifi edged out the immediate former champions Aga Khan Academy of Mombasa 67-59 in a tight and closely fought final.

In semi-finals, St Georges walloped Shimba Hills 102-24 while Aga Khan Academy defeated Shimo La Tewa High School of Mombasa County 58-51.

In boys hockey, Shimo La Tewa scored in the 34th minute through Kazungu Katana to edge out Mazeras to become new champions after immediate former champions St Charles Lwanga of Mombasa was eliminated 2-1 by Shimo La Tewa in the semi-final. Mazeras had beaten St Georges 2-1 in the other semi-final match.

In girls hockey, Bura of Taita Taveta County became new champions after they upset immediate former champions St Johns Kaloleni of Kilifi 2-1 in the final. Leila Fadhil and Valentine Nyambu scored a goal each for Bura while St Johns scored the consolation goal through Zawadi Samini.

In the semi-finals, Bura hit St Charles Lwanga 2-0 while St John’s clobbered Ribe 4-0 on their way to the final.

In rugby, Galana of Kilifi County became new champions after they dismissed Taita Taveta’s Mghalu 10-0 in the final.

Galana scored a try to beat former champions St Georges 5-0 while Mghalu edged out Mwavumbo of Kwale County 7-5 in other semi-final match. In the play-offs, Mwavumbo defeated St Georges 24-0.
