The government has moved with speed to counter the doping claims that have dogged Kenya for the last few days with the Cabinet meeting at State House yesterday giving mandate to the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya.

The local agency was gazetted earlier this year by Sports Minister Hassan Wario, but it has remained dormant ever since and the move by the cabinet will surely speed up its operations

The move comes just a few days after the World Anti-Doping Agency released a report that had recommended banning of Russia from Rio Olympics saying that the country’s athletes were using performance enhancing drugs.

Before the report was released many had feared that Kenya would also be adversely mentioned, something which did not come to pass even though many pundits had said Kenya was still not off the woods just yet.

National Olympic Committee of Kenya chair Kipchoge Keino (pictured left) had also expressed concern on the manner the Kenyan government was handling the doping issue in the country.

Speaking to the English media early this week, the two time Olympic gold medallist had said Kenya’s government has failed to seriously tackle doping and must act swiftly to prevent its athletes being banned at the 2016 Rio Olympics. According to a statement released yesterday from State House after the cabinet meeting, the local anti-doping agency will be expected to carry out doping control, promote the integrity of drug-free sports and also oversee the prosecution of anti-doping cases.

Some of the objectives of the agency also include: promoting values, information and preventive work aimed at fighting doping and develop and execute Anti-Doping rules and regulations.

The Agency will also be required to advise the Government on all relevant matters pertaining to anti-doping and co-operate with the Regional Anti-Doping Organisation.

Carrying out doping control and overseeing the prosecution of anti-doping related offences, promoting the integrity of a drug-free sport among other functions are some of the duties the agency is expected to carry out.
