Dominant Flams: Nakuru side shine at The Standard Media Group games in Kabarak

Nakuru’s Flams won the overall title after beating  Nyeri’s Mountaineers to seven different titles in The Standard Media Group Games at Kabarak University over the weekend.

The Nakuru team won in athletics, football, volleyball, darts, badminton, handball and swimming and lost in pool before drawing in basketball.

Standard Media Group’s Human Resource Manager Marsha Muchiri handed over the overall trophy to Nakuru Bureau Chief Alex Kiprotich.

Kiprotich, who was a member of the badminton team that included Mercy Kahenda, defeated a pair captained by Bernard Ochieng’ of Nyeri 3-0.

 The Flams also scooped the football title after overcoming Mountaineers 4-2.

Henry Kwenya netted a double, while James Kariuki and Chris Tarus returned one each.

Poor  goalkeeping by George Onyango cost Mountaineers who conceded two own goals with the first mistake by the custodian and Kwenya who was later voted the Most Valuable Player.

On their part, Andrew Tharau was Nyeri’s Most Valuable Player drawing the interest of Masha who promised to reward them.

The trio of Ben Ahenda, Mary Kinyori and Joseph Yego won the darts title after a good chase from the Nyeri team of Wainaina Ndungu, Job Weru and Erick Wainaina.

The team collected 1,000 points with a double eight finish by Ahenda to win the darts title.

In handball, Nakuru dismissed their opponents 13-5 after leading 6-3 at the break.

“Although we won, it was a tough match,” said Nakuru handball captain Evans Asiba.

Nakuru’s George Onyango and Kwenya (Henry) finished first and second to amass maximum points and win the swimming title, while Josephat Koech of Nakuru was fourth. Nyeri’s Andrew Nyatharau was third.

The two teams shared the spoils in basketball after a 4-4 draw. On their way to winning the athletic title, Nakuru won in 100 and 200 metres.

In 100 metres, Illa Brian of Nakuru won in 12.95 seconds followed by team-mate Evans Asiba in 13.15 seconds and Ayub Muraguri of Nyeri in 13.45 seconds. Nelson Koech of Nakuru was fourth in 15.17seconds.

In 200 metres race, Leonard Korir of Nakuru won in 27.27.

Team-mate Vincent Ng’eno was second in 29.30 while Nyeri’s Ayub Muraguri of Nyeri was third in 33.12.

Others were Erick Wainaina of Nyeri 34.53 and Anthony Yator 35.09.

Nyeri only won in pool when the trio of Sammy Mose, Nderitu Martin and Erick Wainaina defeated the trio of Vincent Mabatuk, Chris Tarus and James Munyeki 3-0. —[email protected]
