Deputy President William Ruto urges sportsmen to diversify

Deputy President William Ruto on Tuesday presented the national flag to the Kenyan team that will represent the country in the world cup skating championship in Ostende, Belgium.

The flag was given to the team captain Joyce Omwanda.

The Kenyan skating team, the second best team in Africa after South Africa leaves the country on Thursday for the championship that begins this Friday.

Mr Ruto underscored the need for diversifying the sports portfolio in the country, saying Kenyan sportsmen and women should compete in more disciplines than the traditional athletics for which the country is sporting giant.

Noting that sports had become an avenue for employment for talented sports personalities, the Deputy President  said there was need to develop the sporting  talent that was  evident  in the youth of this country as one way of creating more employment opportunities for them.

He noted that Kenya is known for its sporting prowess and expressed confidence that the skating team will carry the Kenyan flag high adding the government through the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Arts will give the team full support.

Present were the Principal Secretary in the Ministry Peter Omutia and Commissioner of Sports Gordon Oluoch.
