By Feverpitch Reporter

In his early 60s, veteran driver Aslam Khan has never-say-never attitude towards racing.

The former two-time Kenya’s Motor Personality-of-the-Year winner in 1989 and 2011 has entered this November’s Kenya Airways Safari Classic Rally which he will be driving a Porsche 911, jugular model.

Khan has been testing this Porsche for the past two season in the local Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC) and is in upbeat moods.

Khan is a knowledgeable and veteran rally driver and navigator. He is the Managing Director of ALS company which is a regional aircraft company based at Wilson Airport.

As if to prove his fervor for classic machines, Khan has never missed any edition of the East African Safari Classic Rally and keeps competing in vintage machines time and time again.

Hard work

Nevertheless, Khan’s success in 2012 when he retained the Classic Car Cup didn’t come on a silver player.

His Porsche was prepared by Tuthill Porsche from the UK and it incorporated all the latest specification of components that were used by the whole Tuthill team of Porsche 911s on the 2011 Safari Classic.

Meanwhile, the Classic Rally is expected to attract tremendous local and international TV coverage. Recently, a recorded version of the event was televised by Supersport.

Safari Classic event director and clerk of the course Surinder Thathi said the filming of the event showcases some of the picturesque sites traversed in East Africa and which are synonymous with the generation of legendary Vic Preston Jnr, Joginder Singh and the late Shekar Mehta.

As a means of promoting Sports Tourism in Kenya, the official film of the KQ Safari Classic showcased some scenic areas usedin previous years including Sanya Juu and Mbulu Mountains in Tanzania and the famous Kerio Valley in Kenya.

Notably, regatding the same event, there are a further nine Porsche 911s entered of which six come from Belgium and three of those are entered by Kronos Vintage for Jean-Pierre Mondron, Stephan Meyers and Gérard Brianti. Also from Belgium in a Porsche 911 is that stalwart of the Safari Classic – Gérard Marcy.
