Bujumbura, Burundi: Gunmen shot dead a general who was a close ally of Burundi's President Pierre Nkurunziza in the country's capital on Sunday, the presidency and witnesses said, heightening tensions after a disputed presidential poll.

General Adolphe Nshimirimana, former head of Burundi's intelligence services who was in charge of personal security for Nkurunziza, was killed in a car in the Kamenge district of Bujumbura, the sources say. Three of his bodyguards also died, they added.
