Shock as Form One girl kills self in Eldoret

A 16-year-old girl has reportedly killed herself in Kesses, Uasin Gishu county for allegedly being denied permission to accompany her mother to a village ceremony.

The body of Chepkosgei Ruto, a Form One student at Loreto Matunda Girls High School on Saturday killed herself inside the kitchen after being left home to look after the cattle.

Speaking to Standard Digital, Richard Kuto, the deceased father, said Chepkosgei wanted to accompany her mother to a local ceremony but was told to remain behind and look after the cattle.

“I didn’t believe my eyes when I saw her dangling inside the kitchen after searching for her in all the rooms. I touched her heart and noticed she was no more,” the distraught Kuto narrated.

He described her daughter as a bright and joyful child who made the family proud when he passed her KCPE exams in 2019.

“I have lost my best friend, a bright girl who made us proud when she passed KCPE exams, scoring 351 marks at Lingawai Primary School, it’s really painful to lose such a joyful child like her,” said Kuto.

Kuto said he reported the matter to Kondoo Police Station who visited the scene.

According to Kesses police boss Cicilia Kemboi, the deceased was smartly dressed at the time the officers arrived in the compound.

She said the teenager might have committed suicide for not being allowed to accompany her mother to the celebration.

Kemboi said police had launched investigations into the matter.

“We cannot give you a true picture of what had happened to the girl because nobody was with her but we have already launched investigations which we expect will lead us in the right direction,”

The body was taken to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital awaiting postmortem.
