Jubilee endorses former MP for speaker’s seat

Jubilee party has endorsed Bernard Mutura as its candidate for the speaker of the Nairobi County Assembly.

The position fell vacant on Tuesday after Beatrice Elachi announced her resignation citing continued wrangles, threats on her life and competing interests from forces outside City Hall.

Jubilee Party Secretary Genera Raphael Tuju yesterday announced that following consultations with the top leadership, the party had endorsed Mutura, a former Makadara member of Parliament.

“We have zeroed in on Benard Mutura as the Jubilee candidate. The other candidates are free to contest but as Jubilee, Mutura is our candidate,” said Tuju.

Further talks

“As for the deputy speaker’s position, we will hold further consultations with the MCAs and President Uhuru Kenyatta and decide,” added Tuju.

At the same time, Tuju has called on MCAS to stop their infighting and focus on helping the Nairobi Metropolitan Service to deliver its mandate.

Seven candidates are seeking to replace Elachi. Besides Mutura, former Nairobi County Assembly deputy speaker Ken Ngondi and Finance Chief Officer Washington Makodingo have also thrown their hats into the ring.

Others are former speaker Alex ole Magelo, Abdi Ali Abdi, Mike Obonyo Guoro and Allan Chacha Mang’era.
