16 minors arrested in Siaya house party

Some 16 children aged between 14 to 17 were on Wednesday night arrested while partying at a house in Siaya town.

Police arrested the children and the party organiser around midnight after a tip-off from the public.

Siaya Police Commander Francis Kooli said the party organiser aged 21 is in their custody and is being questioned.

"We want to know why he organised the party for underage children. We found them in possession of bhang and alcohol. We encourage residents to make quick reports on any move by children that is not authorised," said Kooli.

Kooli said the children were being interrogated at the police station before being allowed to leave.

"We will only release the children to their parents who are already here. We are still consulting with the parents as the children undergo interrogation," added the police commander.

Five out of the 16 children are girls.

"Once we are done with the interrogation, the organiser will face the law. We want to find out if he notified the police before organising a gathering  of more than five people and also if he had authority from the parents," said Kooli.

Meanwhile one person died in an accident on Bondo-Siaya road.

The accident involved a motorcyclist (boda boda) and Nissan matatu.

The police commander who confirmed the accident said his officers had rushed to the scene to get more details.

"I will provide all the necessary details as soon as I get an update from my officers," he added.
