Fire destroys two school dormitories

Fire gutted two dormitories at Mwer Boys High School in Alego Usonga. The fire, which started at 10am Sunday, destroyed property belonging to 150 students. According Principal Joshua Oyucho, no one was injured during the fire outbreak as the students were attending a mass.

“We have lost thousands of books, uniforms, beds and other personal properties. It took the effort of the community to put out the raging flames,” he said. Alego Usonga MP Omondi Muluan said Sh1.7 million, which the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), had set aside for the construction of a classroom will now be used to rebuild the dormitory so as to enable the students resume learning. Siaya OCPD Michael Wahome said the cause of the fire outbreak was yet to be established.

“We rushed to the scene and found the fire had already been contained with the help of community members... We are still doing our investigations,” Mr Wahome added. The school’s administration and education stakeholders will be meeting next week to come up with a plan to raise funds to construct another dormitory.
