A family in Bondo-Nyironge, Migori County cannot bury their 27-year-old son Vincent Omondi due to a hospital bill. Omondi’s body has been lying at Mediheal Hospital Mortuary in Eldoret for two months.

Omondi died at the hospital where he was rushed after he sustained serious head and spinal cord injuries after he fell while fixing a new electric line in Kisii town.

“We have tried to fundraise within the family but we have reached a dead end. We have only collected Sh130,000. Villagers who used to contribute for his medical care have now pulled back, leaving the burden fully on the family,” said his mother, Linet Akinyi.

As at October 20, 2015, the family owed the hospital Sh914, 000, which they say has now run to over Sh1 million.

“This amount of money is a big task to us. How I wish they could know the pain am already going through for losing my only son and bread winner,” said Ms Akinyi.

Central Organisation of Trade Unions Secretary General Francis Atwoli observed that the company the deceased was working for should have taken responsibility according to basic labour regulations.

Omondi is survived by 19-year-old widow, Susan and one child.
