Mungiki suspect charged with extortion

A suspected Mungiki sect member said to have forced a motorcyclist to strip for failing to pay parking ‘fee’ for operating a boda boda business was recently charged with robbery before a Nyahururu court.

The accused, John Kieru Wambui, denied that on October 9, he escorted the operator John Ngatia to a muddy pool at Manguo swamp in Nyahururu where he and others whipped him while naked before extorting money.

Police stated that Ngatia who declined to submit to the group’s demands was robbed of his phone worth Sh5,000 and the motor cycle valued at Sh80,000.

Kieru also denied before Nyahururu senior principal magistrate William Chepseba that on the same day at Social Hall grounds they demanded Sh5,000 for the newly registered motor cycle before ‘allowing’ Ngatia to operate from a parking lot outside PCEA church Nyahururu.

The accused was released on a Sh1 million bond with a surety of similar amount.

Others are still being sought by the police.
