Mombasa swimmers head to SA for Level Two competition

Six swimmers from Mombasa leave on Wednesday for South Africa to compete in Level Two Invitational Swimming Championships.

The team intensified training on Friday under the supervision of coach Abdul Malik at the Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa.

Malik said the team was ready to fight to win in South Africa, noting that the swimmers had shown great improvement.

He said 36 swimmers had initially been selected for the South Africa meet, but some opted out as they were busy preparing for examinations.

Malik said the championships runs from next Friday to March 28. "We expect to come back with many medals as has been our tradition in previous years," said Malik, who is also the Coast Amateur Swimming Association chairman.

The association’s vice chairman, Mehboob Harunani, said Cost Bottlers had partly sponsored the tour to a tune of Sh320,000 through their coca cola brand.

Harunani added that the second team of 13 swimmers set for the Level One Swimming Championships from April 1 to 3 was also busy training. Those set for the Level Two event are Chloe Danji, Ambaar Michaelo and Emily Muteti in the girls’ category, while the boys’ category has Swabri Butt, Patel Kishan and Faye Holding Oliver.

Those in Level One team are (girls) are Jasmin Alibhai, Wairimu Maina Crystal, White Katie, Tadge Holding Faye, Michelle Leichum and Allison Mocellin.

The boys’ Level One team has brothers Alain and Flavio Fontana, Karan Khagram, Njau Njuguna, Vora Shaan, Nelson Jan and Nobby Obuya.
