Swimming team steps up training for SA championship

A team of swimmers from Coast Province has stepped up preparation for the Level Two Swimming Championship in South Africa between March 17 and 30.

The team of 40, selected by the Coast Amateur Swimming Association (CASA), continues training today afternoon under coach Mansoor Fakry from 4.30 pm at Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa. Those in Level One team start intensive training on March 17 at the same venue.

Meanwhile, Mombasa Academy emerged overall winners of the Coast Open Junior swimming Championships at the weekend at Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa.

The team bagged 415 points ahead of Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa, and Nyali Swim Club, who had 380 and 277 points.

BOYS’ CATEGORY

In the boy’s category, Aga Khan Academy (Mombasa) led with 226 points, while Mombasa Academy and Nyali Swim Club followed with 174 and 159 points.

In the girls’ category, Mombasa Academy emerged victorious with 241 points. Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa and Nyali Swim Club were placed second and third with 154 and 118 points. While releasing the final results, CASA Organising Committee Chairman Mehboob Harunani said 28 swimmers in Level One and 12 in Level Two, including some chosen from the event, would represent the association in South Africa.

Harunani said the Level One event is set to run from March 24 to 30 in George after completion of Level Two events set for Elizabeth from March 17 to 24.

Fakry Mohammed would double up as coach and Team Manger of the Level Two team, while Abdulmalik Abdulkarim and Ramadhan Vyombo are the coaches of the Level One team.

Those in Level One team are Urvi Dayal, Rohin Kanji, Karan Khangram, Mansoor Khan, Oliver Holdingfay, Payal Sandrani, Kittie White, Njau Njuguna and Vora Shaan, all of Aga Khan Academy.

Others are Amelia Hanegraaf, Wairimu Cyrstal, Reinout Sanders and Richard Sanders (Braeburn Mombasa International school), Ambaar Michaelo, Mahima Patel and Diya Shah (Oshwal Academy).

Also in the team are Uba Abdalla, Suhail Yusuf, Akshay Maru, Mahir Harunani and Abdulkarim Abubakar Abdulmalik, all of Coast Swim Club.

Also making the team are Tevin Kameta, Caroline Kameta and Nobby Obuya (Nyali Swim Club), Jerome Waudo (Blue Ocean Swim Club) and Alexander Onyango of Shree Swaminarayan.

Those in Level Two team are Hamdan Bayusuf and Deeyn Shah (Mombasa Academy), Shivraj Vaghella, Samuel Williams, Joshua William and Martyn Matiba (Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa).

Others from Coast Swim Club are Abubakar Ahmed, Saahil Harunani, Ahmed Hassan and Abdulmajid Kadernani. Jan Nelson (Nyali Swim Club) and Jamie Nicholas of Braeburn Mombasa are also in the team.
