Leaders mourn ‘real E African’

Regional presidents paid tribute to former President Daniel Moi, saying he will be remembered for his key role in the revival of the East African Community.
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni condoled with Moi’s family as he recalled his early meetings with the former president, describing him as “a real East African”.
“He was a very active East African. He really supported East African unity, he would offer support to East African Federation. “And when we signed the treaty for East African Cooperation we were three of us; it was me, Moi and Mwinyi of Tanzania. Mzee Moi was one of the most outspoken supporters of the East African Federation,” said Museveni.
Tanzanian President John Magufuli eulogised Moi for his efforts to revive the regional bloc.
In a tweet in Swahili, President Magufuli said Tanzanians will remember Moi for his efforts to promote diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed also sent his condolence to Moi’s family and friends. “I would like to express my condolences to the family and friends of former Kenyan President Daniel Arap Moi who passed away today. May his soul Rest In Peace,” said Ahmed.
Uganda’s opposition leader Kizza Besigye in his tribute said Moi’s legacy to Kenya was “a peaceful transition to another leader”.
“From humble beginnings and with a humble, submissive demeanour, President Moi emerged to become a skilful statesman. His main legacy is affording Kenya a peaceful transition to another leader,” said Besigye.
US Ambassador to Kenya Kyle McCarter said, “The United States stands with Kenyans during this time of mourning.
“We offer our deepest condolences to the people of Kenya and to the family and friends of former President Daniel Arap Moi upon his passing. As a friend and partner of Kenya for over 55 years, the United States stands with Kenyans during this time of mourning,” he said.
British envoy to Kenya Jane Marriott sent her “deepest condolences” to the family and friends, and the people of Kenya. “I am saddened to learn of the death of the former President of Kenya, Daniel Arap Moi. On behalf of the British Government, I wish to extend my deepest condolences.”
