Joyce Akinyi, two others charged with trafficking Sh5 million narcotics

Court has granted two women and a Congolese man Sh2 million bond with a surety of the same amount, in a Sh5m drug trafficking case.

Joyce Akinyi, Peris Anyango Omondi and Paulin Kalala Musankinshay were accused of trafficking in the drugs worth Sh 5,588,580 contrary to section 4(a) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic substances control Act of 1994

They appeared before Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) Law Courts magistrate Christine Njagi.

They are alleged to have been caught with heroine at Deep West Resort within Nairobi on July 13, 2019.

Akinyi and Omondi are further charged with possessing forged Democratic Republic of Congo passports contrary to section 54(1)(c) of the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Act No. 12 of 2011.

They all denied the charges.

Through their lawyers John Ogada, Dorcas Osabwa and Elvis Abenga the accused pleaded with the court to be released on favourable cash bail.

Akinyi and Omondi were released on bond of Sh2 million bond each with two sureties of the same amount.

“The two persons should report to the police station once every week and not travel without informing the court,” ruled Njagi.

Paulin was denied bail as he had no known contacts in Nairobi and investigations were also still going on.

“I request the court to grant us all the witness statements, documentary exhibits and inventories of property taken from the accused persons,” said Ogada.

Ogada also asked for the release of Akinyi’s car and other property which were taken by the police during their arrest.

The magistrate ordered that they file a formal application for the release of the property to enable the prosecution to respond.

A pre-trial conference will be held on August 27, 2019.
