Governor Kidero appoints committee to spearhead Nairobi’s Urban renewal project

Nairobi, Kenya:  Nairobi governor, Dr. Evans Kidero has appointed a 17 member County Urban Renewal Technical Committee to spearhead Nairobi City County’s Urban renewal project.

The team which will report to the County Executive Urban Renewal Mr Tom Odongo will be expected to firm up issues prior to commencement of construction.

The County Government expects to build between 10,000 and 12,000 affordable housing units in partnership with the private sector.

The first phase of the 3B USD redevelopment project will be through seven quick win projects in Old and New Ngara, Pangani, Jeevanjee/ Bachelors, Ngong Road Inspectorate staff quarters, Uhuru and Suna Road.

The governor said that Tenants and business people residing within these estates have been consulted through several public participation forums and assured that the County Government has their interest at heart. Existing tenants will be allocated new units for purchase through the Tenant purchase Scheme. All other new buyers will purchase through outright purchase or mortgage system.

Dr Evans Kidero has assured residents that no one will be displaced. “Nairobi City County government cannot and will not evict or forcibly remove tenants from their houses.  The Nairobi county government will make arrangements to ensure the construction process is seamless and that residents will remain in secure and safe accommodations”, he said. 

Estates under Phase one are currently finalizing the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Nairobi to be signed with the county government.
