The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Co-operative Bank of Kenya Dr. Gideon Muriuki is in the list of those who will be honoured with the award of First Class Chief of the Order of the Burning Spear (CBS) decoration in this year's roll of Presidential Awards.

Mr.Gideon will be feted with the award at Statehouse for his continued dedication to strengthen Kenya's 14 million-member co-operative movement through capacity building and consultancy.

Gideon has pushed the movement over 16 years to become a prolific mobiliser of savings and a reliable provider of affordable credit to millions of households in Kenya, hence making it the most successful co-operative movement in Africa.

According to the Co-op bank Group, his award comes at a time when it has become widely acknowledged that successful economies of the future will in essence have to be inclusive in order to deliver the much-needed shared prosperity.

Consequently, the role that Co-op bank plays in cooperatives also got a boost after President Uhuru ordered that coffee and other commodities must be processed wholly before they are exported to avoid exploitation of farmers.

Other notable presidential awards that Dr. Muriuki has previously been decorated with include the “Order of Grand Warrior” (OGW) in 2005 and “Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear”(MBS) in 2011 for the successful turn around of the Co-operative Bank and his service to the nation.
