The hidden great benefits of sex

Besides the obvious benefits that a great sex life can bring to your relationship, there are other not-so-obvious rewards for frequent romps in the sheets. Perhaps it could be all the motivation you need.

Regular sex can keep you looking young

Dr. David Weeks, a neuropsychologist spent 10 years studying the benefits of sex and he found that older men and women with an active sex life looked about five to seven years younger than their counterparts with no sex life.

Nairobi based marriage, family and sex therapist Maggie Gitu agrees. "Sex does cause a release of feel-good hormones which reduce stress and keep you looking youthful. It has been argued to be nature's own antiaging agent," she says.

Regular sex can boost your fertility

Did you know that a man's semen quality and count steadily improves with regular sex and declines with long periods of abstinence? Well, now you know. Sexologists recommend that couples trying for a baby should have sex at the very least twice a week.

"For the women, regular sex regulates their hormones which largely improves her chances of conceiving," says fertility expert Sam Nderi.

Sex twice a week can keep your colds and coughs at bay

It's especially cold in Kenya lately, and with that means colds and coughs are more prevalent. Did you know that sex could be just what you need? According to experts, sex really does boost your immune system.

Psychologists Carl Charnetski and Francis Brennan of Wilkes University did a study on antibody levels in the human body and discovered that participants who had sex twice a week had higher levels of Immunoglobulin A in their blood. Interestingly, more than twice a week, or no sex at all lowers the Immunoglobulin A levels.

In addition to physical health, regular sex will also boost your emotional health. "You are a much happier person as a result of the feel good hormone rush that you get after sex and this boosts your overall emotional health," says sex therapist Gitu.

Sex 21 times a month will reduce chances of a man getting prostate cancer

Cancer is currently on the rise with statistics showing a doubling of incidence rates by 2026. Prostate cancer is the leading cancer killing men in Kenya, more reason to embrace this finding published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Of course there are other risk factors but having more sex wouldn't hurt anyone, right?
