US had ignored trade prospects in Kenya - Ambassador Njeru Githae

26th August, 2018

Kenya’s ambassador to the US Njeru Githae has said the US has only now started realizing the potential for mutual benefits by trading with Kenya.

Githae said the notion that Kenya, and by extension Africa looking to the East, came about on account of China being more receptive to trading with Kenya.

Speaking hours to a historic meeting between US President Donald Trump and Kenya’s Uhuru Kenyatta, Githae added that the number of US companies setting up shop in Kenya is increasingly growing.

“Now America is looking towards Africa. It is not us who looked to the East. It is America that had ignored Africa. They admit that they had not looked to Africa as a trade partner, but now they are,” Githae said.

When Uhuru meets Trump on Monday, key among the issues to be discussed will be to reaffirm the longstanding relationship between the United States and Kenya as a cornerstone of peace and stability in Africa and the broader Indo-Pacific region.

The meeting will also focus on ways of broadening the strategic partnership between Kenya and the US, specifically trade and investment.

On the sidelines of the state visit, Uhuru will also meet heads of other firms to pitch Kenya as an ideal investment destination.
