Broke universities debts hit Sh56 billion

The financial crisis in public universities has hit an all-time high, with the latest statistics painting a grim picture of struggling institutions of higher learning heavily weighed down by huge debts. Data from the universities fund shows that as of June this year, public universities had pending bills amounting to 56.1 billion shillings. Universities fund chief executive officer, Geoffrey Monari, now wants the government to only fund university programs of national priority, which enhance employability and job creation.
