Human rights body opposes VAT bill

3rd July, 2013

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights has urged members of the national assembly to rise above partisan interests and shoot down proposals to impose a 16 percent value added tax on essential commodities. The vat bill 2013 proposes to tax basic commodities and services such as food, medicines, electricity and agricultural products that were previously zero rated. The commission says the government should not trample on economic and social rights enshrined under article 43 of the constitution at the expense of raising revenue.
