Several member states of the common market for eastern and southern Africa (COMESA) have supported the candidature of Kenya’s foreign affairs cabinet secretary Amina Mohammed to the position of the chairperson of the African union commission. Through envoys at the 19th COMESA heads of state and government summit in Madagascar, Ethiopia, Malawi, and Rwanda have voiced support for Amina’s bid. Kenya is represented at the summit by deputy president William Ruto who also lobbied for Amina’s election. President Uhuru Kenyatta who was in Togo over the weekend also lobbied for Amina’s election meeting at least eight heads of state
