CORRUPTION IN THE PUBLIC SECTOR
30th September, 2014
Corruption in the public sector is not relenting in spite of sound policy and institutions to curb it. This is according to the corruption risk mapping study conducted by the Kenya Private Sector Alliance-KEPSA, who indicate that public institutions are still marred by corruption.
The study further faults the government for failing to enforce anti-corruption policies, leaving loopholes for dishonesty. It has pointed out export and imports, procurement, revenue collection, licensing and quality inspection as the risk areas where corruption has been thriving. This has forced companies to spend as much as 69 billion shillings a year towards fight against corruption, and consumed at least 10 per cent of the country’s total revenue. KEPSA is now calling for meaningful partnerships with public institutions, aimed at reducing susceptibility of individuals and organizations to corruption.
